The Association of Freelance Journalists Kenya (AFJ) is a registered non-profit organization founded in 2014 to empower, protect, and elevate freelance journalists across Kenya and the East Africa region.
To equip freelance journalists with skills, technology, and platforms to produce critical, fact-based journalism that strengthens public accountability and promotes democracy.
To lead data journalism and public-interest storytelling in Kenya and beyond, fostering an informed society grounded in truth, transparency, and dignity.
We deliver workshops and ongoing mentorship in data journalism, multimedia storytelling, investigative reporting, and editorial standards.
We provide digital security training, physical safety protocols, legal guidance, and psychosocial support tailored to the unique risks freelance journalists face.
We connect journalists with editors, publishers, and international partners to amplify their work and create sustainable income opportunities. Through our online publication TalkAfrica, we provide a platform for members to showcase their storytelling.
We operate TalkAfrica (www.talkafrica.co.ke), AFJ's dedicated online publication that amplifies high-impact, public-interest stories from freelance journalists across Kenya and East Africa, focusing on accountability, data-driven storytelling, and press freedom.
